The Need

1/3 of the world’s blind population live in India. 80% of this blindness is due to cataracts.

Currently, there are 12 million people in India who suffer from cataracts and are in dire need of cataract surgery.

Over 10,000 patients get restored vision each year thanks to Ruby Nelson Memorial Hospital in Punjab, India. However, up to 70% of the patients are illiterate and face health concerns related to cultural eating habits

Ruby Nelson Memorial Hospital was suddenly shut down due to COVID-19 and the surrounding community was hit hard.

The Solution

Dr. Jacob Prabhakar is an ophthalmologist in Punjab, India. With only $75, Dr. Prabhakar has been able to perform cataract surgeries, operation, travel, and other expenses that arise in his work. Dr. Prabhakar has also efficiently developed a system to shorten the time for each surgery from shrinking the fifteen-minute procedure to around two minutes.

Performed a thorough needs assessment with Dr. Prabhakar, the Ophthalmologist at Ruby Nelson Memorial Hospital.

Created the Visionary Integrated Educational Workshop (V.I.E.W.) audio device to give Dr. Prabhakar’s patients the knowledge they need to prevent cataracts and improve their overall health (in production; completion delayed due to COVID-19).

Southern Adventist University’s Enactus team is currently developing a revenue stream by selling merchandise that funds cataract surgery and also creates awareness of the mission that Dr. Prabhakar has been engaging with. Our merchandise features seasonal designers who are inspired for the work that has been done for India and have developed designs that reflect the cause. Used our merchandise line of student-designed t-shirts and hoodies to raise funding to aid Ruby Nelson Memorial Hospital and the surrounding community

We also created a donation system where family members and friends can also donate various amounts to the enacts fund that will aid with the project.

Keratometer purchased last year through funds we generated is still being used to improve surgery time and quality for 10,000+ patients each year

The Outcomes

Dr. Jacob Prabhakar worked tirelessly to perform over 10,000 surgeries in the last year alone to combat the growing issue of cataracts.

Our ultimate goal is to bring Dr. Prabhakar’s mission to a point of sustainability where he would not need direct donations for operation. Before we reach that goal, we would like to aid Dr. Prabhakar is areas of need such as better equipment or transportation to increase the overall impact of surgeries.

Our goal with the t-shirts is to create a platform that bridges our student designers and business students to collaborate for a cause that goes beyond a t-shirt.

Obtained a $15,000 donation used to purchase 750 V.I.E.W. devices
